911 ABC's
Your first responsibility is to make sure that your child knows, and can repeat, their full name, telephone number and full address. Secondly, your child should be able to make an emergency telephone call from either a home or public telephone. In the event of an emergency, they should be able to pick up the telephone, listen for the dial tone and then dial 911. When someone answers, they should not hang up the telephone unless they are told to do so by the person on the other end unless they feel they are in danger. Try to explain every situation that you can think of that is an emergency. Fires, someone trying to get into the home, and you being unconscious are prime examples of possible emergencies. Have your child practice dialing 911 as you play act being the person on the other end of the line. Be sure the telephone is not connected while practicing.
