Bribery Lure
A gift becomes a bribe the moment the giver expects or requests something in return. Most children are far too trusting and inexperienced to know they are being bribed to do something that could cause them harm. Children who are hungry for affection or who have low self-esteem are very susceptible to this type of lure. Bribes come in many different forms. They can be money, candy, toys cigarettes, drugs or some hot new thing that every child hopes to be the first to get. When probed, most victims who were bribed cited four different things that may have prevented them from falling victim to this lure. 1) More direct supervision by their parents, 2) Better screening of who they are being exposed to, 3) Better education as to the difference between a gift and a bribe, and 4) More open communication between them and their parents. (Children need to know that they should never accept anything from anyone unless they have your permission first. They should also know that someone may attempt to give them a "gift" then ask for a favor in return. If this happens, they should refuse the gift and tell you immediately!)
