Code Word

What if, for some reason, your child needs to be picked up from somewhere, like school or a sporting event by someone other than yourself? You have always stressed, that they were not to go with anyone without permission. what do you do?

A code word is a word you and your child select for just this type of situation. It can be as simple as the word "Superman". The person who is sent is given the code word by the parent with the instruction that it needs to be mentioned to your child before he or she will willingly go with them.

To be effective, the importance of it's use should be emphasized by you. Its importance needs to be continuously reinforced by asking your child anytime they leave home to repeat the code word to you. The direct benefit here is that you both are reminded as to what the code is. In time, the whole thing will become habit and an accepted predator countermeasure. Once used, it should be changed. Many parents who utilize this procedure have the current code word attached to the refrigerator with a magnet as a constant reminder.
