It's important to understand that predators are hunters. As hunters they will do anything to capture their prey. This includes exploiting helpful behavior.
Here, the predator typically drives up to or approaches a child on foot and asks for help mailing a letter. At face value, what could be more innocent? But this opens the door to future contact or even worse - immediate abduction.
The question that a child should be asking themselves is "why me?"
The predator's goal here is to get the child to approach the vehicle. As the child approaches the car, the predator grabs and pulls them into the car.
(Children should not respond to anyone asking for assistance without first advising their parents)
Mail Lure Scenarios
Scenario 1
You're walking down the sidewalk when a man drives up in a car. He leans out the passenger window holding an envelope and asks if you would please mail it for him. What would you do?
Scenario 2
You're standing on the corner waiting for the light to change when a man walks up to you and asks you where the closest mailbox is located. What would you do?
Scenario 3
You're riding your bike when a car pulls up alongside you and a man leans out holding a letter. He asks you to place it in a mailbox for him. What would you do?
Scenario 4
You're walking by a man sitting on a bench when he holds up a couple of letters and asks you to mail them for him. What would you do? What if he offers you money to mail the letters? What would you do?
