NAK Puts the Power in Kids' Character!

NAK Martial Art Center has launched a new character development program, POWerful Words! Now a personal development center, NAK Martial Art Center is incorporating this comprehensive character development program with their fun and exciting martial arts curriculum for children ages 4-14. The program forms the backbone from which all of our students can study, grow, develop, learn and become an upstanding member of our community and a confident individual. “This full education process provides purpose to what we do as teachers—it gives our students something for which to strive, the strength to explore, and a foundation on which to succeed. We feel that by providing several facets to learning, both physical and mental, we can ultimately help our students to grow in a variety of positive ways,” says Dr. Robyn J.A. Silverman, creator of the POWerful Words Character Toolkit.

Using POWerful Words!, which includes “the word of the month” projects and lessons within the context of a fun, organized martial arts curriculum can invite students to listen, share, discover, and reflect—and of course, bring the lessons home to their family. Students and their families can use this positive approach to set, evaluate, prioritize, and achieve goals—building strength, respect, responsibility, and hope along the way. They learn the power of choice, the thrill of accomplishment, as well as the consequences and rewards of certain behaviors.

As you know, we strive to be more than just a kick-and-punch school. We are always looking for ways to enhance your children’s learning experience here at NAK Martial Arts Center. You deserve a full curriculum that helps to develop your children socially and cognitively as well as physically. That is why we are proud to announce our newest Child and Adolescent Development Specialist, Robyn J. A. Silverman, PhD. Dr. Robyn is going to provide a multitude of resources to the families of our school for the betterment of our children. Dr. Robyn, as many call her, has developed a comprehensive character development curriculum called Powerful Words! Powerful Words provides easy-to-follow lessons for children ages 4- 7 and 7 ½ -14 years—lessons that give each student the strength to explore and the foundation to succeed. Here at NAK, such a character education program used within the context of our organized martial arts lessons, can invite students to listen, share, discover and reflect on the ways to become upstanding members of our community as well as confident individuals in their own right.

You will notice some very exciting enhancements taking place at our dojo. Our Bulletin Boards will offer our parents a one stop information center to keep you updated as to what the children will be learning, in addition, you’ll be receiving monthly editions of the Parents’ Perch, Dear Dr. Robyn, and POWerful Projects. The Parents Perch is a letter that describes the POWerful Word of the Month and how we will be teaching it here at NAK. This can serve as a great discussion starter for you and your kids! The Dear Dr. Robyn Column is kind of like “Dear Abby” for parents of the martial arts…I know you’ll find it helpful! Each month our students will have the opportunity to be positively recognized for completing a POWerful Project. These projects are age appropriate, very educational, and fun to do! You’ll also notice that at the end of every class our students will get to take part in a POWerful Mat Chat that will help them to solidify their understanding of the POWerful Character Word of the Month. Dr. Robyn has written this curriculum specifically for use in our martial arts dojo, so now our students will actually be getting two world-class programs for the price of one!
