Use a young animal like a puppy or a kitten is extremely effective. The predator can use several different techniques or a combination of techniques. A simple question directed toward a child like, "Do you know anything about puppies? Mine isn't feeling too good." Usually gets their attention. Another requires that the child simply use his or her imagination. The predator plants the seed and lets the child run with it. For example, he asks his intended victim - "Did you see my puppy come running through here?" Whatever the child's response is, the follow-up question is simply, "Could you help me look for him? He's brown and white."
In this case, there is no puppy! There never was! The child is totally unaware of this fact and is left vunerable to whatever the predator wants to do next.
(Children should not respond to requests, from anyone, asking for assistance without first asking parents.)
